Sciatica occurs when the body’s sciatic nerve is irritated for whatever reason. Did you know the sciatic nerve is the longest and biggest nerve in the body, running from your lower back all the way down to your toes? Those with sciatica experience a terrible pain, usually in their back, buttocks, legs, and/or feet. Besides a pain that hurts, sciatica can also take the form of a numb feeling or even a burning sensation. If you’ve had a subtle “odd” feeling somewhere between your lower back down to your toes, you might have sciatica.

Chiropractors have been known to help relieve the pain and problems associated with sciatica. One way a chiropractor can do this is to use hand manipulation on the lower back to take pressure off a nerve that forms or contributes to the sciatic nerve. You could have a bone in your lower back that’s out of its normal position, causing nerve pain, and the chiropractor’s job is to set the bone correctly. Bulging discs can also be manipulated to relieve nerve pain.

In the area known as the pelvis there’s a sacroiliac joint. This joint, when it gets stressed, can interfere with the sciatic nerve, needing a chiropractic adjustment. Oftentimes, people who participate in sports experience joint/nerve pain in this region of the body and benefit from a visit to their chiropractor.

Finally, you have what’s called a “piriformis muscle” in the vicinity of the buttocks. When this muscle contracts, it can pinch your sciatic nerve. Again, a chiropractor can use his or her hands to smooth that muscle out so it’s no longer pinching the big nerve.

Do you have to take drugs/medication to rid yourself of sciatic pain? No. Instead, you should consider a visit to Lakewoods Chiropractic for natural relief. Please call 651-464-0800 to make an appointment today.
